Welcome, こんにちは and meowdy to Goronyan - a collection of cute cat GIFs made by a sozai creator from Japan nearly 30 years ago!.
These animated images were painstakingly gathered from a site called NYANmama's Homepage, which existed from around 1996 to 2019.
For the first time ever, these little mogs have been brought together on an Anglophone site.
The collection features cats of different colours and coat types, in typically feline positions
such as walking, sleeping and playfully rolling around.
At first I wasn't 100% sure who the artist was who originally created these GIFs, but they were found on sites located in Japan and Hong Kong.
After using a GIF metadata reading tool, I saw that the hidden info found in the GIFs contained a comment "1999.9.17 by Nyanmama".
NYANmama was a Japanese person who ran a cat-themed website and had a part of her site called the
'Free Sozai Room'.
I managed to find more of these sozai (Japanese digital elements/cute graphics) on her site.
In addition to cats, NYANmama also made sozai of sheep, crows, dogs and objects - but Goronyan is dedicated to the kittehs.
"Goronyan" (ごろにゃん) is a Japanese onomatopoeic phrase that mimics the sound of a cat acting affectionate, clingy, or "purring" while rubbing against someone.
This is also a name NYANmama used for a section of her cat sozai where the cats wag their tails and roll over for belly rubs!
The Goronyan site was handcoded by Vijay Shah, without AI, and is intended to look like the old-school web of the late 1990s.
